Overview

The world is witnessing a revolution in artificial intelligence (AI) with the potential to reshape our economy and society as we know it. From healthcare and scientific discovery to transportation and creative industries, AI’s influence is rapidly expanding.

This surge in AI development, particularly in the wake of ChatGPT’s release, has spurred a critical conversation around its governance. Our Smart City CA nonprofit is actively contributing to this dialogue through our involvement with the GovAI Coalition.

Navigating the Complexities of AI Governance

The GovAI Coalition is addressing the complex landscape of AI governance head-on. As highlighted in their recent report, governments worldwide are grappling with the rapid pace of AI innovation and its potential impact.

The report emphasizes the need to balance the immense potential benefits of AI, such as increased productivity, scientific breakthroughs, and solutions to global challenges, with potential risks, including economic disruption, environmental concerns, and the ethical implications of autonomous AI.

Smart City CA’s Role in the GovAI Coalition

Our nonprofit is dedicated to promoting responsible AI implementation for public benefit. We are actively involved in the GovAI Coalition’s initiatives, contributing to:

Increased Transparency: We are committed to sharing our AI-related contracts and contributing to the development of AI FactSheets, promoting transparency and accountability in AI acquisition and use.

Focus on Public Benefit: We support the exploration of AI applications for public good, such as those piloted by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) for tasks like notetaking, record deduplication, and grants support.

Collaborative Governance: We actively participate in discussions and working groups focused on developing responsible AI governance frameworks, including those addressing participatory AI and research for policymakers.

Looking Ahead

The GovAI Coalition Summit provided a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing. Our Smart City CA nonprofit remains committed to working alongside other stakeholders in the Coalition to navigate the evolving landscape of AI governance and ensure that AI technologies are developed and implemented responsibly for the benefit of our communities.

We encourage everyone to follow the @GovAI Coalition page on LinkedIn and stay informed about upcoming events and initiatives. By working together, we can harness the transformative power of AI for good.
